On Thursday, Shae had a follow-up hearing test now that her new tube is in. And this time, when they used the bone conduction processor, she heard them at 25 dB! Previously, we were told that she would only hear at 65 dB with the bone conduction aid. So...I pushed for a loaner Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA). Shae will wear it on a softband, which is a very snug headband. The aid will snap onto it, and will transmit the sound through the bone of her skull to the middle ear, so in theory, she will be able to hear on the right side!!! She will be fitted with the loaner BAHA on March 11th. If the trial goes well, we will get her one of her own. Eventually, the plan would be to have a titanium abutment implanted that would allow the processor to snap on without the headband (and would also improve the quality of the hearing since there would be no hair or skin interfering.) Not sure how I feel about that yet, so we are taking one step at a time. My hope is that the softband BAHA works well for her until she has reconstructive surgery on the outer ear. Hopefully, then she will be able to wear a behind-the-ear or in-the-ear aid. The plastic surgeon consultation is the same week as the BAHA fitting, so that will be a big week for us!
